I'm sure you have heard it more than once, but the old saying "If I'm not home you can find me at the Bowling Center" is definitely true in my case. Except, when I am watching my daughter compete in a High School sport or activity or I'm at work.
I am a USBC certified Bronze Level coach. I have been coaching bowling for 12 years and Love helping children develop their bowling skills. I am secretary of a couple of leagues and President of our local merged bowling Association.
I began bowling when I was in ninth grade in a small (8 Lane) bowling center in the basement of an ELKS Lodge in Michigan. I bowled on my High School team and lettered in bowling as a Varsity Sport. I guess that is why it is hard for me to believe that not all states/counties have adopted bowling as a High School sport. I attended college at Arizona State University and lucked into being asked to bowl on the ASU team. The one stipulation is that I would practice a minimum of 21 games a week. Granted that was back in the early 70s and nowadays I know people that bowl 21 games in a day. I have competed in the Florida State Team USA competitions, National Open and Women's Tournaments for about ten years. I bowled for the first time this year in the Senior Queens Tournament in Charlotte, NC. It was a great learning experience. I will be glad when the ladies go to the arena bowling like the ABC/OPEN Championships have been doing for years. I believe it levels the playing field and takes away the "House" advantage.
I Love my family and doing things with them which is difficult with my two oldest living far away. So, to fill that gap I have grown to love my coaching of other people's children and helping them learn to love bowling the way I have all these years. Bowling is one of the few sports that everyone can do (young, old, physically and mentally challenged). As I tell my youth I coach, "You have one person to beat and that is "YOURSELF". Always strive to improve.
